Your 3 Day Airlie Beach Itinerary
The Whitsunday Islands is Australia’s most popular tropical destination; almost a million travellers visit the region each year.
If you’re planning a trip to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach is the easiest way to access the islands. A vast majority of tours in the region depart from Airlie Beach, and the town has everything you need for a stay, including dining, entertainment, and accommodation.
While three days is not nearly enough time to experience everything the Whitsundays has to offer, it does give you enough time to see some of the best bits! Whether you're pressed for time or just want a more curated experience during your stay, here's our recommendation for the perfect three day Airlie Beach itinerary.
The Perfect 3-Day Airlie Beach Itinerary
Day 1 - Explore Airlie Beach
If you arrive early at Airlie Beach, you’ll need to wait to settle in - check-in for booked accommodation usually starts from 2pm. Most Whitsunday sailing tours depart from Airlie Beach in the early morning, usually 7-8 am, so your first day should be focused on exploring Airlie Beach instead.
If you’ve arrived before check-in, make your way to the Airlie Beach Lagoon for a dip. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is a man-made saltwater swimming area on the foreshore with a stunning view of the Coral Sea and the Whitsunday Islands. The entire lagoon is sectioned off from the sea, creating a safe swimming area with no stingers. There are 3 pools: a wading pool for toddlers, a 1.5m deep pool for children, and a main 2m deep pool with separate swimming lanes.
The Lagoon is open to the public every day with free showers and restroom facilities - perfect for a quick freshen up after a long drive or flight. There are no lockers, so you can either drop your baggage off at your accommodation first. Magnums can store your luggage for you.
The Airlie Beach Lagoon is always buzzing with the holiday vibe and really sets the tone for what your next few days will be like.
After checking in, take a walk around the town to get your bearings. Most of the food and entertainment options are located on Shute Harbour Road, which connects major locations like the Port of Airlie and the Coral Sea Marina, where sailing tours depart from.
Aside from the lagoon, the eponymous beach of the town and Boathaven Beach are worth a visit. Be sure to put on or rent a stinger suit before entering the water - the Whitsundays is home to jellyfish, especially during the stinger season from October to May.

Day 2 - Visit Whitehaven Beach
For a 3-day itinerary, a Whitsunday day tour packs the right amount of fun and activity into a full day of exploration.
If it’s your first visit to the Whitsundays, a tour of Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet Lookout is in order. Whitehaven Beach is the jewel of the Whitsunday Islands, with pristine white sands and swirling silica formations. A wide range of tour vessels travel to Whitehaven Beach from Airlie Beach each day, including luxury catamarans, yachts, and high-speed powerboats.
Visiting the Great Barrier Reef would be our next recommendation. A day tour to the Great Barrier Reef brings you to the edge of the living reef, where you can snorkel or dive to meet the local marine residents. This experience is very much a bucket list activity.
Day 3 - Experience Mainland Tours
Before you know it, day 3 has arrived and the holiday is almost over - except it doesn’t have to be! While there may not be as much time for another sailing tour on the third day of your trip, due to packing and travel arrangements, there’s still time for a jaunt on the mainland.
The Whitsundays region offers lush tropical forests and hiking trails to explore, ideally as part of a mainland tour from Airlie Beach. Mainland tours can take you to Dingo Beach for a different perspective of the Whitsundays, Cedar Creek Falls for a swim under the falls, or a guided Segway ride through Conway National Park.
Each tour comes with transportation included and typically lasts half a day, giving you plenty of time to soak in the tropical side of the Whitsundays before heading back to your accommodation.
