The rainy season in the Whitsundays is during the summer months, from December to March. The wet season brings with it high humidity, heavy rain and a very low chance of a cyclone. But it’s also when the waterfalls are at their most spectacular and it’s a lot quieter. The slowdown in tourist numbers means prices are cheaper too and there’s greater availability with accommodation.

Weather: High temperatures and humidity, ranging from 25 to 33 degrees.

Worth Visiting?: Contrary to what you might read - it is definitely worth visiting the Whitsundays in the rainy season! With the crowds gone and the dramatic weather, it can be a great time to explore the wetlands, see the roaring waterfalls and grab yourself a deal. The storms come and go, often with a heavy afternoon dump before settling down. This means you can take advantage of all the time between exploring the lush scenery. What’s more, there’s loads of great indoor activities too, with bowling, movie cinemas, arcades and other family-friendly activities, plus bars, nightclubs, fantastic dining and more for the adults. And don’t let stinger season hold you back, as there are ample safe places to swim and with a stinger suit on, you can take a dip almost anywhere, as long as you’re crocwise.

The most obvious “best” time to visit the Whitsundays has to be October to November.

This window of time offers the clearest weather, a slight reduction in visitor numbers and idyllic conditions to sail, swim and go hiking. These months are when the weather is at its most consistent, with mild days, little rain and cool nights. The sea temperature is warm and the water clarity at its best, making a day on the reef something to remember. So, whether you’re into adventurous activities like rafting, hiking and diving, or you prefer relaxed days in the sun, casual alfresco dining or snorkelling on the reef, October and November are when the Whitsundays really shines.
