The Perfect 3 Day Whitsundays Itinerary

A holiday to the Whitsundays is on almost everyone’s wish list. If you’ve seen pictures of the islands, read travel articles or talked to anyone that’s visited the region, no doubt you’ve gone away and thought to yourself that this tropical paradise is one for the bucket list.

With so much to see and do in the Whitsundays, it’s easy to think you have to dedicate a week or more to experience it properly. To be honest, you can spend months here and still feel like you’ve got plenty left to be explored. That said, we’re not all blessed with endless days off work to relax on the beach or snorkel amongst one of the world’s great reefs. Some of us are a little more pressed for time. It could also be that you’re passing through and intend on someday coming back, but want to get a good taste for what the area has to offer. To make life easier for you, we’ve put together a 3-Day Whitsundays Itinerary that showcases the highlights.

Whitsundays Day 1: Keep It Local

The gateway to the Whitsundays is the coastal hub of Airlie Beach. It’s a thriving resort town and the perfect base from which to explore further afield, either up and down the coast or offshore. However, with so much on offer right at your doorstep, there’s no need to travel far.

The café scene is thriving, with great coffee and dining spots dotted along the coast. Start your day by having breakfast with a view at Sidewalk Café on the foreshore. Then grab a takeaway coffee for a stroll along the Bicentennial Walk. It’s a 4km one-way journey along a series of boardwalks and pathways with amazing views along the route.

With the day now warming up and a few miles in your legs it’s time for a swim, so make your way to the Airlie Beach Lagoon. Located in the centre of town, the lagoon sits right on the oceanfront and features playgrounds, grassy sunbathing spots, barbecues, lifeguards and perhaps best of all – no stingers or marine life! Spend a few hours alternating between swimming and sunbaking, but don’t linger too because there’s still more to do.

After a late lunch at one of the many restaurants near the lagoon, it’s time to see some of the local wildlife on a turtle spotting cruise or glass bottom boat tour. Both are lowkey ways to view a few local sites from the comfort of a boat, while also seeing marine creatures like turtles, reef fish, stingrays and more.

Scenic Flight over the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach

Whitsundays Day 2: Head to the Reef

The start of the itinerary was about settling in and seeing town. Today is all about one of the region’s main drawcards – The Great Barrier Reef. You've got two options for seeing the reef: a day trip on the water or a scenic flight overhead. A small number of operators run boat trips, so spots can fill fast. Out there you can snorkel the coral gardens among schools of colourful fish, or go scuba diving if you want something more adventurous. A scenic flight is the easier option and shows you the sheer scale of the place from above.

Another option for the day is to visit Whitehaven Beach. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the planet, Whitehaven can be accessed by boat, plane, or helicopter. While there, take a walk up to Hill Inlet Lookout for unrivalled postcard views.

Whether you visit the reef or Whitehaven Beach, you’ll likely be back in Airlie in time for a cocktail at one of the seaside bars. There are lively establishments with music and entertainment, or laid back venues for those after views and quiet conversation.

Cedar Creek Falls

Whitsundays Day 3: Explore the Hinterland

There’s more to the Whitsundays than beaches, reef and islands. The regions interior is also a remarkable place to visit, with lush rainforests, waterfalls and mangrove systems. One must-do is a crocodile safari. The Proserpine River is home to a healthy population of estuarine crocodiles, and a day tour is the perfect way to see these prehistoric animals up close in their natural habitat.

Another option is to visit the Cedar Creek Falls. Located 30 minutes from Airlie Beach, this spectacular cascade sits at the head of a delightful waterhole that’s perfect for a refreshing swim. The surrounding rainforest adds to the dramatic and picturesque setting.

After spending the day exploring the inland and searching for crocodiles on a river cruise, your final thing to do is to board a boat for a sunset cruise. You would be hard pressed to find a more relaxing or romantic way to end the day. Think dazzling colours, a glass of champagne, the gentle lapping of the water and a cool sea breeze. It’s the slow wind down after a few days of experiencing some of the highlights that the Whitsundays has to offer.
