The Perfect 4 Day Whitsundays Itinerary
With its year-round tropical climate and spectacular scenery, it’s no wonder why the Whitsundays is one of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations.
Most visitors to the Whitsundays come for the beaches, islands, lush hinterland and reef. It’s an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, especially if you’re into water sports. However, you don’t need to be an active traveller to have an amazing time. There’s something for every holiday-maker, from the young and energetic, to those after relaxation and adventure – or a mix of it all!
It’s easy to spend several weeks exploring the coast and inland or head further afield to the islands and outer reef. But if you’re short on time and need to maximise your days, it’s all about picking the teeth out of the myriad of options and planning an itinerary that takes advantage of both day and night.

Whitsundays Itinerary: Day 1
Any trip to the Whitsundays starts in the gateway town of Airlie Beach.
With Mackay to the south and Bowen to the north, Airlie sits in the heart of the Whitsundays region. A short drive from the Proserpine Airport will see you at this coastal haven.
Assuming you’ve arrived prior to hotel check-in time, leave your bags at reception, but don’t forget to grab a towel and swimmers. First up is a morning stroll to grab breakfast at one of the local cafés. There’s plenty to choose from and many of them have great views.
With a coffee in hand, if it’s a Saturday you can head to the Airlie Beach Markets. Otherwise, take a stroll to the Airlie Beach Lagoon and find a spot to relax and watch as the town comes to life. Next up is a swim in the lagoon, to wash away the travel fatigue and get you into the Whitsundays holiday vibe.
Spend the rest of your day exploring Cannonvale Beach - we recommend hopping on a Tuk Tuk for a ride there from Airlie Beach. A Tuk Tuk ride is a great way to get an overview of the town’s highlights and history, covering beaches, marinas, gardens, parks and shops along the waterfront route.
Finish your day with Coral Sea views with dinner at the Whitsundays Sailing club. It’s casual dining with a spectacular backdrop.

Whitsundays Itinerary: Day 2
Today we’re headed to the reef.
An early start will see you joining one of the many Great Barrier Reef Tours. There’s a couple types of experiences to choose from, either a faster-paced visit to the outer reef pontoon, or a slower paced catamaran journey to the closer islands and fringing reef. Either will have you in the water seeing the colours and wildlife that the Whitsundays is famous for.
A trip to the Reefworld Pontoon at Hardy Reef is very popular with families. Here you can snorkel, join a semi-submersible tour, or take a stroll through the underwater observatory.
Once back at Airlie Beach you’ll want to wind down a little. Take a stroll down the Marina Boardwalk and enjoy a sunset drink and meal at Sorento Restaurant and Bar.

Whitsundays Itinerary: Day 3
From the sea to the sky, it’s time to fly!
Some things are best seen from above, and that includes the iconic Heart Reef. A scenic flight will whisk you around the Whitsundays, taking in views of Whitehaven Beach, Heart Reef, Hill Inlet and many of the surrounding islands.
Once back on land head to the Coral Sea Marina and join the team from Whisper Tours for a turtle spotting cruise in the harbour. Being an electric boat, it’s ‘whisper’ quiet and enables you to get closer to marine life. The vessel is also small, so it doesn’t get crowded.
To end your day, we’re back on the water for a sunset sailing cruise. There are adults only or family friendly options to choose from, but the one thing they all have in common are some of the best sunset views in the world.

Whitsundays Itinerary: Day 4
We’ve saved on the best Whitsunday highlights for last – Whitehaven Beach.
To finish your four-day itinerary in the Whitsundays we’re taking it easy with a full day trip to Whitehaven Beach. It starts with a cruise to this iconic location, before disembarking and spending your day swimming, snorkelling, walking on the white sands and relaxing in the sun. A BBQ lunch followed by a hike up to Hill Inlet lookout will see you taking in one of the most well-known and pretty views Australia has to offer.
After cruising your way back to Airlie Beach, the final evening should be spent with a cocktail in hand. There are options aplenty, with The Garden Bar at the Coral Sea Marina being a favourite with locals and tourists alike. For something more casual, head to Airlie Beach Hotel.
To see all that the Whitsundays has to offer in just four days is impossible. But with our itinerary you’ll get to experience some of the highlights and save plenty to see and do for next time.
TL;DR: 4 Days Whitsundays Itinerary

Day 2: Reef tour to Hardy Reef, snorkelling, sunset drink at Marina.
